Progressing with Paper : Exploring a more sustainable Practice

Developing your Creative practice (DYCP) Project

“Progressing with Paper’’ was a 10 month research and development project supported through Arts council England’s Developing Your Creative Practice Programme. The project focused on exploring more ecological and sustainable ways of working with paper - a material central to my practice. Throughout the project I investigated new techniques and materials, experimenting with recycled cardboard, paper pulp and papers with a low envirnmental impact. I consulted with mentors and coaches, undertook a 4 day residency at the Paper Foundation to make hand-made paper out of plant fibres and by-products from the textile industry. I learnt basket weaving and mould making techniques from professional practitioners. The research culminated in 5 character based artworks, embodying a balance between sustainability, craftsmanship and storytelling. I hope to use this research to inform my future practice, one that places environmental responsibility at the heart of the making process.
